Conservative responses to the limited release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how heavy censorship portray former President Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric
Justice Department officials defended the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “At no point in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so transparent with the public about such a sensitive law enforcement issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo describing the censorship process.
Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and image appear in some of the documents, the widespread black blocks raise serious questions about what may be concealed behind them. A number of Republicans immediately called for greater transparency.
“The public are furious and walking away,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the statute, and implied that a subsequent Congress may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this document release egregiously fails to adhere to both the intent and the letter of the act,” he added.
Some Conservative Commentators Rally In Support of the Release
But, some conservative commentators and former President allies swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—from a DOJ led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are completely redacted, and many of the individuals depicted in photographs have their identities blacked out.
Yet a few are not, including high-profile individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, enabled certain conservative figures to launch the attack.
“It’s quite rich how the political left falsely claimed President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently said he was aware of no criminal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been concealing those documents for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can release as many grainy decades-old photographs as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response added.
Broader Rightwing Comment Remains Muted
Nonetheless, overall comment on the political right was comparatively subdued after the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the loud demands for transparency that preceded the congressional approval to enact a bill requiring the documents' release.
The commentator, who not long ago accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest advocates for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing personalities were given physical folders of materials that included little previously unseen data.
