Whenever a major awards ceremony draws close, you'll find a demand for introducing additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
- Another creative title missed out in 2019
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Just some puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
